What Makes Us Happy?* Put Money Low on the List

  1. Savor Everyday Moments (see previous post)
  2. Avoid Comparisons “Run your own race” (see previous post)
  3. Put Money Low on the  List

We are a money-obsessed society (okay we’re also youth/beauty obsessed, but that’s another post), but does it bring happiness? Research says not. It seems that the more we look for satisfaction in money and material things, the more it eludes us!

Tim Kasser and Richard Ryan did research across nations and cultures and reported, “The satisfaction has a short half-life-it’s very fleeting.”  Research shows that those who put money high on their priority list are more at risk for depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.

I’m not saying money isn’t nice. It certainly helps keep a rood over our heads, but once you have your basic needs taken care of, other things in life have much more potential of bringing happiness in your life….things like relationships, connectedness, love, your health, faith, etc.

Keeping up with the Jones’s and putting money before everything else is ultimately a losing battle. The goodies are temporary and you’re always left wanting more.

Want happiness? Try focusing on the 3 F’s: Friends, Family and Faith.
