“Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.” –Alan Keightley
So many people spend their life doing “the right thing,” thinking that there is a right way to live in this world. You may be getting that message from your family, friends, workplace and/or society. How many of you have made decisions in your life based on expectations from your parents, teachers, or others?
I think people have been led to believe that there’s a “right” way to live, you just have to find it. The problem is that you’ve been looking in the wrong place….you’ve been looking outside yourself for the answers when really finding answers is an inside job. The only right way to live is the right way for you!
So why do so many fall into the pattern of doing what others expect? Because it’s easier, that’s why (at least in the short run). Just follow the rules, expectations and directions from others. Easy, right? Do what you’re told and you’re set. The problem is that if you are living a life that’s not a good fit for you, you’re left feeling empty and inauthentic. You wake up in the morning wondering why you’re feeling a bit lost, unfulfilled or unhappy.
If you want to feel good about your life, you have to figure out what YOU want, not what others want for you. The challenge is that it takes time, energy and the willingness to take a good honest look at yourself. It’s difficult work and only you can reach the answers you are looking for.
The good news is that you don’t have to do it alone. There are lots of professionals, books and other tools out there that can help you find your “purpose.” It’s work and it takes time, but I’m here to tell you that it’s SO worth it!! You won’t regret it….I guarantee it!
Living authentically is the greatest gift you can give yourself. It’s also a gift to others because it’s in your authenticity you find your unique gifts and it’s your gifts that you are meant to share with the world.

I think I have figured out what I don’t want. That’s a good first step, right? My challenge is to figure out what I DO want. And how to get it without re-joining the rat race. I have been idling on neutral for a while now and I think I am ready to take the next step. Mary Kay, help!
